Mystery surrounds Regal closure

The Regal nightclub in East Oxford has failed to reopen after a planned break over the New Year.

The club in Magdalen Road was due to close for a brief period over the New Year, but was expected to reopen on Monday, January 12.

Today, the club remained closed and no-one from the organisation could confirm if or when it would re-open.

Last week, partner Charlie McCreedy told the Oxford Mail it was due to a change in shareholders and he hoped it would reopen last Friday.

But the club remained shut, with planned weekend events cancelled at short notice, and neither Mr McCreedy nor manager Michael Keel were available for comment.

It's a shame some people complained at the beginning about The Regal being used for live gigs, so instead it was allowed to open more as a club than a live venue. You tend to get more trouble from the kind of crowds that go to clubs than you do with people who love live music. It could have served the local music community well. Now what?

Yes definately, There are no decent live music venues anymore. The regal got full of Chavs.

myonitlive.com had loads of bands lined up to play @ The Regal but lack of co-operation and experience from the Regal was there downfall

The Regal must be one of the more important buildings in East Oxford's recent history, not only because it is a Grade II listed piece of Art Deco but also because it is so full of personal memories for thousands of local folk. In the 33 years that the Regal was a cinema, hundreds of lifelong relationships (and possibly a few of their offspring) must have begun with a good snog in its back rows!

All credit to McCreedy, Marsh and their team for spending so much money and time restoring the Regal to its 1930's glory. I hope their ambitious investment hasn't fallen victim to the credit crisis.

Every listed building, however beautiful it may be, has to earn an income in order to be kept in good repair. Joe Chapman and cottage2day are spot on: the Regal should be Oxford's top live music venue. It's bigger and has more character than the Zodiac, which lost all its atmosphere (and any chance of a pint of anything remotely resembling ale) when it became the Carling Academy.

Any millionaires out there fancy becoming East Oxford's fairy godparent? Mr Branson of Kidlington, can you see the Regal from your balloon?

I also think it should have been a live music venue rather than a club.

The Zodiac has lost all its querkiness since becoming the Carling Acadamy.

The good thing about it being a Carling is bigger names gig there now, this is the only venue we have.

cottage2day you may be right about Carling, but I can't bear drinking their lager all evening! It'll always remain the Zodiac to me: the place where I saw The Damned fans chanting that Captain Sensible was a w**ker and someone threw a pint at him! :o)

thats the beauty of it, go to a local pub, have a few nice chilled pints of their finest, then roll into Carling for a gig and a dance up... spot on!

It's failed as a Cinema
It's failed as a Bingo Hall
It's failed as a Live music Venue

It's not really an attracive building either. Why not demolish it and build a pay&display car park instead? Would be far more useful.

I heartily agree with the sentiments of those here berating the demise of the Zodiac. Of course, the Carling Academy is now the O2 Academy... I've not visited it since the change, but I reckon the beer can't be any worse than Carling... urgh! While we're lucky enough to have Brookes and the Academy for larger bands, Oxford is really struggling for smaller live music venues at the moment, especially since the loss of the 'downstairs' Zodiac, the Point at the Plain and most recently the Port Mahon. The Backroom at the Bully, the Wheatsheaf and the Jericho Tavern are all very well, but they can't possibly cater for all of the local talent AND all the visiting small bands on the 'toilet circuit'. It was these small, intimate venues that brought us the likes of Radiohead and Supergrass, and it's therefore a real shame that the Regal has seemingly failed as a live venue.
