Fifty motorists stopped by police

About 50 illegal motorists were caught out by police in only two and a half hours yesterday.

Police pulled over 21 vehicles in Marsh Lane, Marston, in Oxford, because the drivers or passengers were not wearing their seatbelt.

Three people were fined £30 and 18 were given roadside advice.

Ten drivers were stopped for using their mobile phones and were fined £60 and received three penalty points on their driving licence.

Five cars were seized for having no tax and 12 were removed because they were deemed unsafe for the road.

Police carried out the stop checks between 8am and 10.30am yesterday.

I am interested to know why 3 where fined and 18 where “given advice”. Surly wearing a seatbelt or not, is very clear.

Maybe the difference is “Good Morning Officer I am very sorry I have forgotten to fasten my seatbelt”

or

“Haven’t you got anything better to do?”

It is too late for advice on seat belts, the law has been in place for many years now. Make the fine £100 minimum

a check set up at 3pm on any school day at Rose Hill Primary school will find scores of kids without seatbelts. Ironicaly the parents will probably wearing theirs though.

what about all the idiots that drive with one (or both) broken lights? they are more dangerous.. what about the idiots that weave around the road? the idiots that drive at a unsafe speed? what about them?

I agree with your sentiments but the report does state that 17 cars were taken off the road - 12 of those "deemed unsafe for the road" so it is obviously a worthwhile exercise.

There should be more traffic police on the roads to deal with the other issues and realistic punishments to accompany convictions.

I agree with Sid, how about a daily check on various roads into Oxford, switch it about, say woodstock road, then the Plain, Rose Hill, barton, then Banbury road, make each decision in the morning and go for it. Criminal drivers will not know when there going to get hit.

If people don't want to wear a seatbelt it shoult be up to them.
The police should do something useful, when my vehicle was stolen i didn't even get a visit, the next day i saw six of them on a bridge over them M40 playing with a radar gun. Lazy barrstards.

'Three people were fined £30 and 18 were given roadside advice'. What is the f***ing deal with this, are the police chosing who and when they hand out the fines now. the police are a complete waste of time in this county. My brother was crashed into by an immigrant, he called the police and they said they will not come out unless someone is injured, we later found out he never had a license or insurance. Seatbelts save lives, simple. You have to be a complete .... not to wear one - you never when you are going to need it.

People should have a choice about wearing seatbelts provided that there is no one else in the car for them to injure. Also they can **** well pay for the emergency treatment they receive, plastic surgery and other medical costs, long term care if they suffer brain damage etc, not to mention the costs associated with police, firemen and paramedics needing counselling for PTSD after seeing someone's face smeared across a car windscreen.

I'm sorry you've only got a littl'un but your preoccupation with your inadequacy may have blinded you to the fact that people do pay-it's called the NHS and you don't get a choice, unless of course you're on welfare in which case you can't afford a motor. Should we fine people who don't wear hard hats on building sites?

The police will not come out unless someone is injured, or... if you are blocking the road and causing chaos in rush hour!

When someone crashed into me, the biggest mistake I made was pulling over to let traffic past. If it ever happens again, I will stay put!

I can't believe they let people off for not wearing seatbelts! I think it should be a 1 week ban for this and talking on mobile phone, as these idiots need to learn!

TC, I have every sympathy for you re your stolen car and I know how unhelpful the police can be (having experienced this myself) but we can not choose which laws we will or will not obey. Whether it is failing to wear a seat belt, riding on the footpath, driving when drunk, stealing cars - the law is quite specific and we all know this.

Much better, but please include spaces after punctuation marks, and remember to capitalise the beginning of a sentence.

In my day persistent carelessness resulted in detention. Liberal as I might be, I share your sentiment that modern youth has had it far too easy, with painfully visible results.

I do not want debates on multiculturism, as for me I just don't want or agree with it at all, as it offers us no benefits and certainly big disadvantages to our racial heritage, and I do not want our pedigree diluted by other races, regardles of their ability to dance, sing, run, , make curries , etc.
If I went to purchase a dog and it was part Indian. African, Chinese, and British I would leave it alone. It's all in the breeding, and its not negotionable.

A bit late now Stan! Like most of the world we've been a nation of cross-breeds for several thousand years. And as I'm sure you know, cross-bred dogs are healthier, smarter, and have better temperament.
