Social worker illegally claimed £44,000 benefits

A social worker fraudulently claimed more than £44,000 in benefits over seven years, a court was told today.

Yarrow Davies, 30, a single mother, admitted claiming thousands of pounds in income support and council tax benefits which she was not entitled to, from the Department of Work and Pensions and Oxford City Council.

Andrew Evans, prosecuting, told Oxford Crown Court that Davies, of Percy Street, East Oxford, was caught out after receiving grant cheques while taking a social work course at Ruskin College between 2005 and last year.

Investigations revealed she failed to declare her income support and council tax benefits to the college, and it was found she had an undeclared bank account, where she was receiving £1,000 a month from her father, Mr Evans added.

In total, Davies had falsely claimed £44,725 from 2000 to 2007.

Jennifer Edwards, defending, said: “She didn’t face up to reality and buried her head in the sand.

“She wasn’t decking herself in jewellery and driving round in flashy cars, she was trying to bring up her two children.”

The benefits have since been paid back by Davies’s father, Ms Edwards added.

Davies has been suspended from her job as a social worker with Oxfordshire County Council.

Judge Julian Hall sentenced her to nine months in prison, suspended for a year, and ordered her to carry out 150 hours of community service.

He urged her employer not to dismiss her.

How has this person leant anything when Daddy bailed her out?

Does Social Services do police checks?

Did she declare her pending court case?

How can our vunerable people be entrusted with this woman?

Maybe her Daddy should teach her to take responsibility for her actions.

If she can`t ake responsibility for her actions how can she teach others to?

Now let's see.

To earn £44K would take the average Brit two year's work.

So she is due a 9 month's sentence under the foolish laws of this country.

Worth doing then!

"She wasn’t decking herself in jewellery and driving round in flashy cars, she was trying to bring up her two children.”

So, it's OK for the taxpayer to foot the bill for her children is it? Did she consider getting the father to chip in?

Why should a parasitic woman such as this be allowed to continue as a social worker, who, in effect, represents society?

Her parents must be heartily sick of her, she is inadequate.

No, she stole money, lots of money and got caught.

Of course her employer should dismiss her. The judge should remember that she was stealing tax-payers money, money that pays his slightly-more-than-4
4k salary.
I think his sympathy/empathy for her obviously wealthy and caring father has blinded him to the fact that this person is not suitable as a social worker.

If she hadn't been caught, she would not have paid the money back. She's no different to any other chancer and blagger out there.

Lacking moral values and out of touch with reality; this Judge will make a smashing social worker. As for the offender wouldn't you just welcome her into an elderly relative's home. No need to worry about her being light-fingered, she's a social worker! Perhaps we could put her in with the young or those suffering from severe learning difficulties; after all she's not the sort to take advantage of the vulnerable. Tell you what let's not bother about convictions; they're probably no indication of character at all. Why not have burglars and armed robbers running the police and confidence tricksters running out charities? Oops have just realised..........
