ELECTION: Evan Harris speaks about defeat

LIBERAL Democrat Evan Harris has spoken after losing his Oxford West and Abingdon seat.

Conservative Nicola Blackwood won the seat by 176 votes just after 4am.

Mr Harris, speaking on a televised BBC interview, said: "I lost by 176 votes. It wasn't comprehensive.

"It was a marginal seat. I accept a week ago we certainly were not expecting it to be that marginal."

You are so right. More months of this vile corrupt failure of a regime to endure, thanks to Dr. Harris' Liberal chums.

Lord Palmerstone,

Bizarre interpretation of the results. So if there was no Liberal Democrates, who do you think their 6 million counted votes would be cast for? It's the Liberals you have to thank for Labour not winning every election.

Indeed. I'm truly sorry that we've lost an outspoken rationalist in Parliament, but Dr Harris, you work for your constituency first, or you don't work at all.

Oh Lordy,

You've shown amazing contempt for 6.5 million voters. Almost a quarter of all votes cast for for the Liberals.

Ambient??! I'm often sanguine, but rarely ambient.

Isis, you are absolutely correct. I have speaking to a lot of people around my area and Harris lost because he didn't answer letters and ignored his constituents.

There are 4 voters in my household alone who voted for him last time. Add to that my relatives with the same response from Harris and you have 28 people!

Easy ride in your second term Harris and we bit back. The dole office will be open today, pop down there!

Scaramuccia this area has never been a labour seat. It has always been between the Liberals and Conservatives.

Harris dirtied in his own nest and he paid the price. If he had looked after his constituents he could have stayed!

I think it is a shame he lost, he was a good MP. I am sure you will live to regret getting rid of him. In Chesterfield we lost a good Lib Dem MP simply because a few conservative voters failed to vote tactically, thus letting Labour back in. There never was a chance in Chesterfield of the conservatives wining, and in the last two elections most people have realised this. I am sure that the voters who switched would have much preferred to have a Lib Dem than Labour MP, and are now regretting their actions. The sooner we have a single transferrable voting system which requires the sitting MP to get 50% support the better.

Golum "GET REAL!" you can not sya national issuezs did not have any effect. He could have go in wiht a handful of tactical Labour votes but the Lib dem leders said people should not and they got into unnecessary Brown bashing in the last few weeks which antagonised many of my Labour friends who were going to vote tactically but decieded not to - that was very suilly campaign management and the Lib Dems that lost in seats where the Labour vote did NOT go down ought to be asking Cleggie and huhne what they were playing at. I am absolutely puzzled by the poor share of the actual vote given the polls when the proportion for TYoroes and Labouir was quite accurate to the poll of polls trends.

It is a high parliament with the Conservatives in power. No matter who the Liberals sided with who of had the majority.

This is not new politics as it happened in the 80's.
