Name: Nicola Blackwood

Candidate for: Oxford West & Abingdon

Party: Conservative

Votes: 23,906

Profile:

NICOLA Blackwood, 30, was born in Johannesburg but moved to Oxford two months later after her father angered the Apartheid government by speaking up for the rights of the black community.

She trained as a classical singer at Trinity College of Music before gaining a first in music at St Anne’s College and an MPhil in musicology from Emmanuel College, Cambridge.

After volunteering with aid projects in Mozambique, Rwanda and Bangladesh, she worked full time with the Conservative International Development team.

Since 2006 she has been a commissioner of the Conservative Party human rights group, set up to promote human rights in foreign policy. Miss Blackwood was one of the original team which set up the Conservative Party social action project. Since its inception in 2007, this project has set up over 100 small-scale, local projects designed to support and empower struggling communities.

She is the daughter of a local doctor, lives in Summertown, is a governor at her local special school and volunteers as a domestic abuse champion.

Miss Blackwood has campaigned to stop NHS cuts, for a better deal for pensioners and to stop inappropriate development without infrastructure, like the Northern Gateway.
