Flooding: road closure update

There are now only a few roads which are still closed following major flooding across Oxfordshire yesterday.

Roads that are currently closed, according to Oxfordshire highways department, include: Mill Lane, Chalgrove; the A420 at Acorn Bridge; High Street, Chalgrove; and Bridge Road, Ickford, from Ickford to Shabbington, near Thame.

Earlier today, the A329 in Milton Common, near junction seven of the M40, was closed, together with the A338, between the A415 Frilford Road junction and the Grove Park Drive junction in East Hanney. These routes have now reopened.

The River Ray and its tributaries from Shipton Lee to Islip remain on an Environment Agency Flood Watch after almost a month's average rainfall for Oxfordshire fell in one day, while Oxfordshire's other rivers remain on Flood Warning.

Firefighters in Oxfordshire received about 120 calls linked to flash flooding in parts of the county.

John Kelly, the county's emergency planning officer, said accommodation was prepared for any residents evacuated due to flooding, but in the end it was not needed.

He said: "There was a lot of surface water on the roads yesterday but this morning it started to drain away quite rapidly and a couple of days of sunshine should help to dry the ground out."
