A well-known face in the Headington Quarry area has died aged 100.

Edith Lock died at Townsend House, Barton, Oxford, where she had lived for the last 10 years, on Boxing Day.

Mrs Lock was born in Headington Quarry in 1911 and attended Quarry School.

She studied there until she was in her teens, when she went into domestic service.

Further work followed at Job’s Dairy and the Co-op Dairy in Headington.

She married George Lock in 1935 and left work to raise sons Perrin, born in 1939, and Roger, born in 1943.

Mr Lock, who worked as a sheet metal worker at Cowley’s Pressed Steel, died in 1985.

Her eldest son said: “She was known very well locally because Headington Quarry when she was younger was like a village, rather than just being part of Oxford. Everybody knew everybody else.”

The family lived in High Street and Kiln Lane. Mrs Lock was involved in life at Holy Trinity Church, Quarry Road.

She also sat on committees for the Quarry’s community centre and sang in the church choir.

Mr Lock, of Witney, said: “It was just what she was used to, it was a safe area, she knew almost everybody.”

Asked about her longevity, he said: “She didn’t really drink at all, she smoked a few cigarettes.

“She had an active mind.”

Mrs Lock, who died after suffering dementia for some time, also leaves four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Mrs Lock’s funeral will be held on Monday at 11am at Holy Trinity Church.
