A GREAT-GRANDMOTHER who was awarded the MBE after spending 40 years serving Oxford’s Rose Hill estate has died.
Ethel Wheal, who visited the elderly in hospital and carried out welfare work until she was well into her 80s, died aged 96, on June 21 at Marston Court residential home.
She secured clothing cheques for families overwhelmed by poverty while working as a credit company collector for Provident.
She also served for 32 years as women’s secretary of the Littlemore branch of the Royal British Legion.
Mrs Wheal and her late husband Jack were among the estate’s first tenants.
She leaves six children, 26 grandchildren, and numerous great- grandchildren.
