HENRY Evans ran Bicester’s only department store and helped build the small shopping precinct Evans Yard.
Mr Evans, who has died aged 61, was the third generation of his family to run Alf Evans and Son in Sheep Street. It was founded by his grandfather Alf in 1902.
It closed in 1981 when Mr Evans opened a menswear shop in Market Hill.
Father-of-three Mr Evans, who was born in and lived in Bicester all his life, was heavily involved in Bicester Round Table, going on to become area chairman. He later joined the 41 Club.
He was also a supporter of educational charity Bicester Feoffee, acting as secretary.
The grandfather-of-four was passionate about sport. A keen cricketer, he played for Bicester and North Oxford Cricket Clubs, before becoming an umpire.
He was diagnosed with cancer this year and died on May 31.
