The changing face of Jericho
11:30am Monday 11th June 2012 in Memory Lane By John Chipperfield
Nearly 400 residents signed a petition in 1965 calling on Oxford City Council to act over a row of derelict houses in Cranham Street which, they said, disfigured the area.
Mr W H Norman, headmaster of St Barnabas School, is seen in the picture above handing the petition to Town Clerk Harry Plowman. Looking on are Councillor W G White, left, and Councillor Edmund Gibbs.
Lee James Young had an inquisitive mind, even at the age of 18 months. The picture on the right shows him admiring the items on sale at a stall at the Jericho Residents’ Association fete in 1972. There was also plenty on offer at the Jericho Street Fair in 1995. In the picture below, two youngsters enjoy the entertainment.
