Smiles please!

Smiles please! Smiles please!

There were plenty of smiles at this important school occasion – and for good reason.

Pupils at Headington Middle School in Margaret Road, Headington, Oxford, organised a sponsored quiz in 1982.

In exchange for a donation, those taking part were asked questions on ways to prevent accidents in the home, on the road or on holiday.

There was also a section on safety, dealing with poisons and treatment of burns.

And when the questionnaires had been returned and the money totted up, there was more than £600 in the kitty.

It had been decided that the cash should be given to Dr Barnardo’s homes, to benefit less fortunate children.

As you can see in the picture above, a special assembly of all pupils and staff was arranged for the donation to be handed over.

Clive Child, area organiser for Dr Barnardo’s homes, was invited to the school to receive the cheque.

The honour of handing it over fell to 11-year-old Katharine Franks.

She is seen holding a copy of the safety quiz questionnaire alongside Mr Child, surrounded by her fellow pupils.

Does anyone recognise themselves in the picture or remember the occasion?

Write and let me know.
