THE band played and the regulars danced.
It was clearly an evening for letting your hair down at the Lambert Arms at Aston Rowant, near Thame.
Even the local bobby, Pc Nelder, was there in his uniform.
The pictures belong to Rita Scrace, of Elms Rise, Botley, Oxford, and were sent in by her cousin, William Marks, of Wheatley.
Mrs Scrace, whose maiden name was Bull, lived with her parents at Adwell Cottages on the A40, about a mile west of Postcombe.
She dates the pictures no earlier than 1947 – the year her late husband, John (Jack to his workmates at Pressed Steel), started lodging in Postcombe.
Mr Marks writes: “He was secretary of the football team, so the dance may have been to do with that.”
The name of the accordion band and the names of the musicians are also a mystery.
However, the word ‘Meccalacarno’ appears on a drum and music stand, with the letter M prominently displayed on the other stands.
Can anyone provide answers?
