THIS is another photograph of Jane (or Shannon), the steam locomotive that ran for many years on the Wantage Tramway between the town and Wantage Road station, on the Didcot-Swindon railway line.

It was taken in 1969 when she was being moved from the UK Atomic Energy site at Wantage, where she had been in store, to Didcot Railway Centre.

She started work under her original name, Shannon, in Bedfordshire, in 1857.

By the time she appeared on the Wantage Tramway in 1878, however, she was known as Jane.

After the Tramway closed in 1945, the Great Western Railway put her on a plinth at Wantage Road station, reverting to the old name, Shannon.

She remained there until the station closed in 1965.

As we reported (Oxford Mail, April 12), Didcot Railway Centre has launched a £14,000 appeal to restore her to full working order.
