JANUARY was the month when children enjoyed New Year parties.

Karen and Alison (we don’t know their surnames) are seen enjoying themselves at the Oxford Post Office children’s party in 1979.

More than 70 four to 10-year-olds munched through sandwiches, rolls and cake, swilled down gallons of orange squash, then invited their mums and dads to join in fun and games.

Steve Viner, treasurer of the Oxford Post Office Sports and Social Club, which organised the party at the Lake Street community centre, in South Oxford, said at the time: “We like to make it a family affair.“ In the other picture, panto stars Roy Hudd and Dana met children at a party at the ABC cinema in Magdalen Street, Oxford, in 1976.

Staff at the Oxford Marks & Spencer store, who organised the party, raised more than £400 towards the cost and were on hand to help the event run smoothly.
