SANTA has brought plenty of cheer to generations of children in Oxford over the years.
As these pictures from the Oxford Mail archives show, he is likely to pop up anywhere, any time, with his sack of toys.
The first picture shows him handing out presents to Jennifer and Charmian Goodway at Florence Park Residents’ Association’s Christmas Fayre in Cornwallis Road, Cowley, in 1965.
Santa had toured the area in a Rolls-Royce before arriving at the fayre.
The hall was so packed with people that it was impossible to operate the children’s roundabout, provided by the 41st Oxford Scout group.
In the next picture, a young visitor is clearly well pleased with her gift from Santa, at Ward’s department store in Park End Street in 1959.
The third picture was taken a year later, possibly again at Ward’s, and shows children enjoying a trip in a boat with Santa.
The old man paid a surprise visit to the Oxford Town Hall creche in 1989 and he was clearly a favourite with the dozen delighted children, aged three months to five years.
