FOUR Oxford telephone operators battled through to the area final of the Telephone Personality Girl competition after defeating all other competition in June 1970.

Patricia Jones, 34, Susan Green, 21, Ann Lynas, 18, and Linda Newton, 21, (left to right in the picture) were assessed on their personalities and their knowledge of the telephone service.

They all worked at the Oxford Exchange in Speedwell Street.

One of three judges was the Oxford telephone exchange’s wife, PE Buck.

The Oxford winners were nominated to go to a regional final and from there, if they were successful, they would have gone to London to take part in a national final.

The national winner of the competition won herself a double holiday voucher and £100. The runners-up also won holiday and cash prizes.
