AN EMERGENCY appeal was launched by a Headington church after fears its roof could collapse in June 1976.

St Andrew's in St Andrew's Road said it urgently needed to raise £35,000 before the end of the year.

The church was closed for the week at the time this picture was taken to get rid of the death watch beetle in the roof.

Pictured is worker Alan Gibson using a spray gun in the rafters of the church.

Parishioners met in the parish hall to discuss ways of raising the money, which was needed for repairs, maintenance and redecorating.

The roof work alone was estimated to cost upwards of £15,000 to complete.

Rev Stephen Platten said: "The whole roof has to be re-tiled sometime this summer because if it is left to the winter, it would well mean we have no roof at all."
