EYNSHAM youth club reopened in February 1971 after a £2,500 revamp funded by Oxfordshire County Council.

Pictured are committee members Elaine Wickson and Cliff Brown chatting about records on the opening day.

Improvements at the club, near the Eynsham Library, and the appointment of a full-time youth mentor were intended to cater for the growing youth population in the area.

Alongside the main hall, the youth centre also featured a warden's office and coffee bar with built-in seating.

Warden Charles Wood, 30, divided his time between Bartholomew School, where he helped with careers, and the youth centre.

Prior to working in Eynsham, Mr Wood had sailed twice around the world as an officer cadet on oil takers and spent two years as an officer in a passenger ship in the West Indies.

He had also spent time in South America, the Falkland Islands and the United States.
