THE personal service which had become a trademark at Oxford's Park End Street Post Office continued right to the end in April 1985.

Regular customers were given a glass of sherry by postmistress Ness Wooloff, as she closed the counter shutters for the last time.

Park End Street was the last of four Oxford branches to be closed by the Post Office during that period.

George Street, Kingston Road and Highfield had all ceased business, as well as Headington branches.

The closure plans caused a storm of protest from customers and Oxford City Council, which publicly criticised the Post Office.

Three part-time staff lost their jobs as a result of the Park End Street closure.

Mrs Wooloff, who ran the branch for 10 years, said: "I am very, very said to see the post office close."

She continued serving in the general store part of the shop.
