THE last of the squatters' old-fashioned buses pulled out of Salesian College in Cowley in 1988.

For a couple of months, squatters had moved in to the college site causing sleepless nights for neighbours.

Residents said the noise, smell and general disruption had been unbearable.

Oxford City Council, which owned the former theological college, applied for an eviction order and took the group to court in order to repossess the land.

Little more than two hours after the expiry of the eviction order the group packed their belongings and moved out.

The city sheriff's officers arrived at the college in Crescent Road to find the squatters burning rubbish and wood on a bonfire.

Police stood by as they brought furniture and clothes out of the college and packed up the buses.

They had been living at the site for months without electricity, gas or water.

The group put carnations on the front of the buses and in their hair before moving off in convoy.
