A BOLD mum took on a frightening challenge after being dared by her three sons.

Jenny Devaney took part in a sponsored abseil from the roof of the Regal EMI Bingo and Social Club in Cowley Road, Oxford, in June 1983.

The event was organised by the 22nd Oxford Baden Powell Sea Scouts, who hoped to raise £1,000 from the spectacle to pay for a minibus and camping equipment to use on their summer camp to Wales.

Mrs Devaney's three sons – Sean, 15, Grant, 13, and Stephen, all members of the scout group – dared their mum to take the drop, and she took them up on the challenge.

After completing the 75ft descent she said: "It wasn't too bad once you took the first step. It is standing on the top which is the worst part.

"It was not as bad as I thought it was going to be actually."
