ABOUT 100 guests attended the official opening of one of the most up-to-date public houses in the Oxford district in April 1957 - the Fair Rosamund on the Elms Rise Estate in Botley.
The ceremony was performed by the Mayor of Abingdon, Coun. C.G Stow, managing director of Messrs Morland, the Abingdon Brewery.
The site for the Fair Rosamund was bought on the hillside overlooking the city soon after the war and before the estate was built, but even then Botley and North Hinksey were among the most rapidly growing areas in the Oxford district.
The new house stood on the junction of Crabtree Road and Chestnut Road.
It was large enough to provide, not only a spacious inn but also a garden, car park and sufficient room for one or more Aunt Sally pitches.
The manager chosen to open the new inn is Mr H. M Creasey who had the advantage of being already well-known in the district m for he had been for some time steward of the Botley and North Hinksey Social Club.
