BROTHER and sister Paul and Sara Lambert went through to the second stage of the BBC's Young Musician of the Year competition in October 1987.

The two teenage pupils from Peers School in Littlemore had been practising for two hours a night to give themselves a chance of winning a place in the finals.

Paul, 14, also played the trombone and Sara, 15, the flugel horn in the National Youth Brass Band and the Oxford Silver Band.

To qualify for the competition Paul and Sara of Sheepway Court, in Iffley, had to pass a top-grade exam on their instruments with distinction and be able to present a 15-minute recital.

Their teacher, and head of music at Peers School, Philomena Soloman, said it took a lot of hard work to build up their solo repertoire for the contest.

She said: "They are both very talented but it was a nice surprise when they both made it through to the second stage."
