OLYMPIC pentathlete Richard Phelps said a big thank you to youngsters at Marston Middle School who helped pay for the English Commonwealth Games team's trip to Auckland in February 1990.

Mr Phelps, who represented Britain in both the Los Angeles and Seoul Olympics, gave a talk to the children who ran more than two miles round their school to raise money for the team.

Sponsorship money was still being collected for the run, of which 70 per cent went to the English team and the rest to the school.

Modern pentathlete Phelps, who did not go to Auckland himself, told the children how he began his career in sport at the age of 12 and talked to them about the need for the money they had raised.

All of the children were also given a photograph of themselves and Phelps.

They were also shown a video of the history of the Commonwealth Games.
