The Cowley St John football team that progressed to the final of the Oxford Schools’ FA Senior Shield in 1955. Can anyone recall if they won the trophy?
I HAVEN’T seen many pictures in Memory Lane from Cowley St John School in East Oxford, so I thought I would submit this one.
It shows the school football team that beat Botley 4-1 in the Oxford Schools’ FA Senior Shield semi-final at the White House ground, Oxford City’s former ground off Abingdon Road, in 1955.
It appeared in the Oxford Mail’s Saturday evening sports edition, Sports Mail, otherwise known as the ‘Green ‘Un’ as it was printed on green paper.
The players are – back row, left to right, R Lancaster, D Jones, D Marlow, K Webb, J Gardner, K Halsey, front row, M Cox, K Haines, K Louch, J Perry, A Merritt.
