THE long hair is probably a giveaway that this isn’t a recent football picture.

This was the successful team fielded by Pressed Steel in the Oxfordshire Thursday League in the 1973-4 season.

The trophies on display are the Thursday League Trophy and the Korebo Cup.

The players are – back row, left to right: S McKearnan, G Saunders, S Johnson, W Trinder, J Harris, W Haynes (captain), S Welch, R Kerry (manager); front row: N Humphrys, T Wheeler, D Moffitt, A Crossam, M Moss and P King.

The Thursday League provided midweek sport for shop staff and others, who worked on Saturday afternoons but had a half-day on Thursdays. It began in 1904 and in its heyday ran three divisions.

It had teams of railwaymen, factory workers, busmen, postmen, policemen from the city and county forces and soldiers from local Army bases. The league was wound up in 1976 after Thursday early closing was phased out.
