Sport featured prominently in the Southfield calendar.
Pupils were encouraged to take part in rugby, hockey, cricket, athletics, cross-country, basketball and tennis – but not football, as it wasn’t considered manly enough.
Unlike today, many games were held on Saturdays – and pupils, with staff supervising them, were expected to turn up to represent the school.
Failure to do so would often lead to sanctions the following week, at least for the boys.
These pictures come from former pupil Howard Manger, of Exeter, who, like some of his fellow students, was a prolific sportsman, appearing for Southfield school at rugby, hockey and cricket.
