Families in Barton, Oxford, turned out in force to enjoy the fun of a pram race in the rain.
Competitors looking suspiciously like men but dressed as ‘mother and daughter’, ended up wet inside and out – they had to drink three bottles of beer and change places twice on the circuit around the estate.
The race, organised as part of a club night by the Headington branch of the British Legion in 1966, was won by Mr J Trendell and Mr E Ballard.
After the pram race, it was the children’s turn to parade in fancy dress. Four-year-old Corinne Holloway was the winner, wearing nothing but leaves and carrying an apple. John McDowell, half in shorts and half in cricket whites and carrying racquet, bat and hockey stick, was second as the ‘all-rounder’, and equal third were Rosemary Wallis as Lady Godiva and Yvonne Cox as a Bunny Girl.
The evening programme included a spaghetti eating competition, an egg and spoon race and a beer drinking contest.
