Opening your pages, I was very surprised to see my brother Ossie in the photograph of the City of Oxford Silver Band receiving a cheque towards new uniforms and instruments (Memory Lane, August 17).
He was christened Horace (Frederick Mark) Trinder, but known by most as Ossie. It was only his daughter Debbie who called him Fred.
Also in the photograph is his son David, second from right top with the glasses, who played in the band as a trumpeter, I think. Ossie was very enthusiastic about the band. David later joined the Army as a bandsman. They lived in Sorrel Road, Blackbird Leys, before moving to Torquay.
I remember the silver band being based in a building adjacent to Temple Cowley swimming pool and occasionally played bingo with Ossie’s wife Pam. Ossie is no longer with us, but Pam lives in Babbacombe, Devon. David lives in Torquay.
