THIS is the “Mop Brigade” who kept the village church in Chilton sparkling for Sunday services.

Miss Mop, alias Pamela Rolls, captain of the village Girls’ Brigade, and her young troop of cleaners spent an hour dusting the pews, polishing brass and scrubbing the church floor to raise money for National Brigade Week in 1986.

Even the youngest members, aged five, who couldn’t reach the cobwebs, had special duties cleaning the children’s tables and chairs.

Twenty-five girls were sponsored by the minute and with cash from other events, they hoped to raise about £120.

The Rev Chris Stott, Rector of Harwell with Chilton, said: “They did a splendid job.”
