I CAN name all the teachers in the picture of staff and pupils at the Oxford Central Girls School in 1949 (Memory Lane, May 4).

From the right, they are Miss Stogdale (cookery), Miss Haigh (history), Miss Babbington (English), Miss Soulsby (science), Miss Arnold (maths), Miss Chadwick (headmistress), Miss Abigail (biology), Miss Spackman (geography), Mrs Brocklesby (PE) and Miss Knibb (art). We also had Miss Smitham (French).

As for the girls – the top row is my year, although I am not on this picture. I can name Sheila Withey, Mavis Swann, Winnie Ludlow, Valerie Gardner and Jackie Bebbington. Also in the picture I can pick out Barbara Hicks, Pat Bond, Kath Brown, Betty Evans and Audrey Holiday.

I remember having to go to the Wesley Memorial Hall for PE, to Hinksey baths to learn swimming (which I never did) and to Longwall to the sports fields for netball, tennis and hockey. What a trek that was!

Meals were in the hall next door to the school. How times have changed. Happy days, though.
