WHEN it was suggested Warborough should re-enter the Best Kept Village Competition in 1970 after a lapse of two years, critics said there was no chance of success.

But they were proved wrong when Viscountess Hambleden unveiled a sign that confirmed it was the winning ‘midi-village’ – those with a population of between 700 and 1,500.

PUPILS at St Laurence’s Primary School studied and then produced models of their village church and two churches at Benson. They were displayed at St Laurence’s Church in 1967. Pictured here are two of the model makers, Edward Cross, 10, and Peter Andrews, eight.

INGENUITY was the name of the game when the electricity was cut off at the Six Bells pub in 1984. Landlord John Medlock cashed in by cooking steaks in the pub fireplace and offering customers the chance to drink by candlelight. Regulars Dave and Maureen Scriven found miners-style hats so they could see what they were drinking.
