While working in Bury Knowle Park at Headington, Oxford, in the 1980s, I would make a small pond for the house martins at the beginning of April each year.
I would soak the mud so the birds could reline their nests under the eaves of the Georgian house in the park.
The dog walkers would let me know when the birds had arrived from their 6,000-mile journey from Africa.
The birds arrived on the same date and at the same time two years running. The twittering sound was always worth the wait.
