Hundreds of scraps of waste material were put to good use by nurses and patients at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Headington, Oxford.
In just 10 days, they finished a patchwork quilt, the size of a double bed, to be auctioned at an event organised by the hospital’s sports and social club in 1976.
The idea of making a quilt came from Sister Zoe Elliott and when she returned from a weekend off, she found most of the work had been done.
The money was needed by the club to repay £500 it borrowed for a sports hall.
