Councillor Ron Stares was quick to respond when complaints were made about an outbreak of unsightly signs in Chipping Norton.
He decided direct action was needed – and toured the town taking down the signs pointing to a new development by national house builders Barratt.
When this picture was taken in 1986, he had already removed eight signs tied to lamp-posts and street signs.
Mr Stares said the signs had been put up illegally and he was entitled to take them down.
