Staff at Shergolds iron-mongers in Market Square had extra spending money at Christmas in 1979 after winning £8,867 on the football pools. Fifteen workers were in the syndicate and each received £591 for a 25p stake. Hero of the day was Peter McGauley, who filled in the winning coupon.
- PUPILS from Batt School and St Mary’s School learned all about road safety in 1977. Kelly Mason, eight, is pictured in a flashy yellow car involved in a make-believe accident while his classmates acted as helpful passers-by.
- Everyone had fun while learning how to use computers at Blake School. Pictured at one of the machines in 1995 are, from left to right, Mathew Everett, Nicola Chadlin, Katy Scott and Sophia Vanttinen-Newton, all aged 11.
