IT WAS intended to be a leisurely sponsored walk, but ended up as a pub crawl.

The idea was for four men from the Waterwitch pub social club at Didcot to walk to eight pubs in the town collecting money for under-privileged children.

But it snowballed when one of the team, Sid James, turned up dressed as a baby in a pram, complete with potty.

Banjo player Jeff Wilks provided musical accompaniment as “mum” Paul Lovelock and Alan Corbett took turns to look after the “youngster”.

Money dropped into the potty during the jaunt round town in 1974 produced £32.
