THERE was a nautical theme at the Story Museum in Oxford on Saturday as children and their parents listened to Nick Cope perform songs from his new album.

The former Candyskins frontman launched The Pirate’s Breakfast by playing two concerts at the museum. Many of the 200 people who turned up had wore pirate costumes for the occasion.

Mr Cope, who lives in East Oxford, said: “It was brilliant. It was really good fun. The main theme of the album is about family life. There are songs about old recipes being passed down from grandmothers and about a hamster being dead. It’s my fourth album in five years, which I suppose is quite prolific.”

The 49-year-old has been writing children’s songs for seven years and said he enjoyed the freedom it gave him.

He said: “You don’t have to try to be different or cool. But it is harder than you think. There’s a thin line between not making it too cheesy and not making it too grown-up.”
