THE tough world of ice hockey was opened up to these youngsters, even though there was no ice and they were wearing soft shoes.

They were pictured at Thame Sports and Arts Centre in 1984 taking part in a week when teenagers were introduced to a range of mainly American sports.

Apart from ice hockey, they were treated to sessions of baseball, basketball, soft ball and Frisbee throwing.

The sessions were poorly attended at the start, but they quickly became popular – on one occasion, 30 youngsters had to be turned away because there was no room for them.

The centre’s assistant manager, Chris Kemp, said: “Everyone thoroughly enjoys the activities – they are real winners.”
