KEEN gardeners drew lots for their plots when new allotments became available.
They had been waiting seven years for planning obstacles to be overcome on the Stockham Park estate at Wantage.
And when the land finally became available in 1979, a draw was organised to decide how the plots should be allocated.
Bob Goodenough, centre, chairman of the town council’s recreation committee, is pictured supervising the draw with, left to right, Sue Stanton, Dennis O’Brien, John Flanaghan and Hilda Lovegrove.
One of the first numbers out of the flowerpot belonged to town clerk Elsie Farbrother, who had helped draw up the waiting list as secretary of the Stockham Park Residents’ Association.
