Gotcha!

THIS ‘convict’ wasn’t going to get far – Bob Saunders was firmly in the arms of the law.

Special constables Eileen Peedle, left, and Jean Cowley grabbed hold of him light-heartedly to stop him getting to the start of a fun run in 1984.

He was one of many competitors to appear in fancy dress in the run from Wallingford to Brightwell-cum-Sotwell and back, to raise money for local groups.

To infinity and beyond...

THE batsman appears to have skied the ball, judging by the direction in which he and two fielders are looking.

Oxford Mail:

This was an impromptu game of cricket in the grounds of Cowley Road Hospital in Oxford in 1962. Note the names of the shops in the background – much has now changed.

The great ape-scape!

NOT quite sure what we do here, traffic warden Kenneth Carter seems to be saying.

He was no doubt trying to explain that parking wasn’t allowed on double yellow lines, but Marquis the ape didn’t seem to be getting the message.

Oxford Mail:

Marquis was appearing with Ken Dodd in the Big Show of 1966 at the New Theatre, Oxford.

Poster girls

BAYSWATER Middle School at Barton, Oxford, made a clean sweep in a competition to promote bus safety.

The city-based Thames Transit bus company ran a competition in 1995 inviting children to design posters to drive home the message.

Oxford Mail:

First prize went to Rebecca Mundy, left, and second prize to Suzanne Anderson, both 10 and both Bayswater pupils.

They are pictured with their winning posters and flowers aboard one of the company’s buses.

Jester and morris men go on the run

NEARLY 1,000 people joined The Great Run at Banbury in 1987 to raise money for the Horton General Hospital.

Oxford Mail:

Children and adults, some in fancy dress, made their way around a 3½-mile course through the town centre. Adderbury morris men are pictured bringing up the rear.

The event raised more than £5,000 towards an appeal to support the accident and emergency unit.

Poker faces

THESE gruesome creatures took part in a production of The Nosebag at Windmill School, Deddington.

Oxford Mail:

Three performances were given in 1970 to raise money for a swimming pool at Bloxham School, which was replacing Windmill School.

The devils pictured here are Shirley Jackson, Susan Moreby and Carolyn Ramsay.
