Night levy talks

Oxford City Council has agreed to look at a “late night levy”, to be imposed on pubs, nightclubs, bars and restaurants that serve alcohol between midnight and 6am.

Councillors discussed the idea at the full council meeting on Monday and decided a sub-committee would examine the proposals further.

In my opinion the levy should only be imposed on those venues that continually fail to control their customers. If a late night venue is acting responsibly in providing a safe environment we should be encouraging them not penalising them.

If we continue to make drinking in bars, pubs, and clubs in Oxford overly expensive all that will happen is more and more people will take the “party” to localised venues such as their homes where the chance of disruption and trouble will increase due to the lack of control a sensible establishment provides.

As all these establishments already pay all the relevant taxes and charges, this extra charge may be unlawful, and attract a challenge in the court costing us a lot of money to defend. Why after Midnight and not Ten, what about before Midday?, what about Kebab Vans and shops that leave the city littered in discarded food and packing. If the council need to raise more money, then cut back on bloated pay and pensions, and don't penalise already hard up businesses struggling to keep going in these times. As I said they already pay their dues.
