Work to redraw car parking spaces at a Didcot Parkway car park is almost complete.

First Great Western agreed to carry out the work at the Foxhall Road car park after drivers complained last year that they were being ticketed for parking outside marked lines.

Station operator First Great Western manages the car park, and spokesman Dan Panes said: “There were 1,090 spaces and now there are just over 1,000 after about 40 spaces were made slightly larger.

“This work will be completed very soon.”

Vehicles were ticketed for not parking within the marked space, hence they complained. Were they refunded and/or was the ticketer instructed to be less perdantic?

It seems that FGW has gone off the rails by losing 90 spaces or nearly 10% of potential revenue. Guess that the ticketer will now make no exceptions and claims for refunds will be unsuccessful.

Cars invariably seem to be larger and even the best parked car is really close to its neighbouring car and bumps and scratches on doors are becoming more prone. Surely wider spaces is a far better option than cramming loads in just to try and make a bit more money?

It is a pain in the bum, but I think when marking up new car parking spaces you have a minimum and a maximum length and width. Most new builds now go for the minimum space allowed to get more cars in. It’s the same with all these new developments and building on garden spaces. As long as it fits the legal criteria then it's ok. Just like when you see new house with a garage, you can get your car in there but try opening the doors to get out! More chance of getting out the sunroof!! Common sense would tell you the spaces are too small, but more small car parking spaces means more money!!!

I guess they have forgotten the fact that often less is more ;)
