St Clement's car park flats plan approved

Controversial plans to build student housing above St Clement’s car park have won approval after a planning process spanning several years.

Developers Watkin Jones changed their plans for a four-block 140-room student housing development to include a “phased approach” to building work, so the car park would stay open during the project.

And the last-ditch attempt to get the application past the council’s planning review committee succeeded earlier tonight.

If that means they don't take up houses, then yes.

This is the logic: put students into purpose built accommodation, then they'll not rent houses.

What will actually happen is that students will still take up houses as well as the new accommodation when complete.

So, another victory for the all-consuming and ever-greedy developers, as they happily 'skip' their way through Oxford's demeaning spires. However there is at least one downside to making more and more places available to students - that much of the attraction of Oxford used to be 'academic exclusiveness' which has increasingly become attainability for the masses. Ironically, the success of promoting the Oxford 'brand name' has turned the City from a seat of learning, into an 'international education factory' for whoever can afford to pay - including all of those British students who will end up graduating, complete with the 'added bonus' of starting their working lives saddled with £20,000 to £30,000 in debt.

You're right steve, at nine grand a pop both universities will get as many extra students as they can, but what I don't understand is why the council can't get on a build houses for locals as quickly as the uni do for their students
They don't build many houses now, it seems to be only flats.

If this story said that the application has been refused, I'd refer back to a comment I made on article 9747057. "If this is refused they'll just keep submitting more applications with minor changes until they get the result.” The council must have made loads of money, thousands of pounds for each application.

Can't anyone appeal against the decision?

`Can't anyone appeal against the decision?` - No because they won't listen to the locals. Keep a note of the names of those who kept calling this in for when we next vote - they are too expensive to have on the council.
