Get Oxfordshire Reading: Prime Minister David Cameron backs our plan to give children the best start in life
EVEN if you have only five minutes to spare, you can help support the Oxfordshire Reading Campaign, and encourage your child to foster a love of reading.
That is the message from Prime Minister and Witney MP David Cameron .
Mr Cameron is among the first to get behind the Oxfordshire Reading Campaign, an Oxfordshire County Council initiative backed by the Oxford Mail .
He said: “If we want to give children the best chance in life, whatever background they are from, we need to help them develop the skills, aspirations and experience they need to fulfil their potential.
“Reading is absolutely central to this and that is why the Oxfordshire Reading Campaign has my full backing.”
The PM spoke about the importance of reading in his own family life.
He said: “I loved being read to as a child and Samantha and I try to do the same for our children. Sometimes it’s for five minutes and other times for 20 minutes but I genuinely believe that, no matter how busy we are, it makes a difference.
“The county council deserves great praise for investing such a large chunk of money into the campaign and I hope that together – parents, schools, local business, media, the voluntary sector, communities and government – we can make this campaign a great success for the benefit of our children.”
Mr Cameron has made a point of showing a personal interest in the educational outcomes of Oxfordshire children. When the county council’s new leader Ian Hudspeth was elected, Mr Cameron told him to make improving education standards a priority.
