What a load of rubbish

SIX skips were filled within 15 minutes in Barton yesterday as residents took advantage of a new scheme to tidy up the neighbourhood.

Oxford City Council brought the skips along between 2pm and 4pm as part of its Cleaner, Greener campaign.

Dave Leggett, 72, of Barton Village Road, said: “It’s a brilliant idea. We could do with it more often really. Barton is looking a bit tidier already.

“The problem is people just can’t be bothered to go to the dump so they dump it anywhere they can find.”

Two of the free skips were placed in Fettiplace Road near Brome Place and Atkinson Close, and others were placed in Barton Village Road, Burchester Avenue, Bernwood Road, and Bassett Road.

Among the items binned were bicycle tyres, flower pots and broken furniture.

If people don't have a car, or can't take all their rubbish onto a couple of buses to Redbridge (you know, with their toddlers, or using their wheelchairs) then bringing communal skips to local areas seems to be a brilliant idea from Cowley Marsh's management. Next step? Weekly rubbish collections, where the bin people will take what you leave for them like they used to before Cllr Tanner and his 'leaner-greener' mob took control !
