A GROUP from Oxford was crowned the top UK team at the world’s largest student motorsport competition.

The students from Oxford Brookes University beat 50 UK universities to take the top British team prize at Formula Student 2012 at Silverstone.

Their lightweight car, weighing just 159.5kg, had the best handling in the competition, winning the figure-of-eight skidpad event at the competition earlier this month.

Giuseppe Naselli, 34, team leader of Oxford Brookes Racing, said: “It feels really good because this was our first goal.

“I don’t think there is a better place in Europe where you can study motorsport.”

The team also came seventh overall out of 134 teams from 34 countries.

Formula Student, which has run since 1998, challenges universities from across the world to design and build an F1-style racing car in one year before racing them at Silverstone.

In the tightest finish in the competition’s 14 year history, Chalmers University, from Sweden, came first.
