OXFORD’S urbanites can swap city life for a taste of the countryside on Sunday.

The Young Farmers’ County Show and Rally is being hosted by the Witney branch of the Young Farmers this year, but will involve clubs across the county, including Abingdon, Bicester, Enstone, Faringdon and Henley.

And rams Pinky and Perky were in Market Square, Witney, to publicise the event, when shoppers were challenged to guess the animals’ weight.

Eleanor Martin, 24, chair of Witney Young Farmers’ Club, said: “Most people only get a glimpse of sheep in a field as they drive by, so we thought it would be great to take Pinky and Perky out to the public, so they could touch them, get up close and learn more about them.”

Trying her hand at guessing the rams’ weight was Christine Mustoe, 17, from Bampton.

Miss Mustoe, a farmer’s daughter, said: “I guessed they weighed 60kg, but we won’t find out until the winner is announced at the show this weekend.”

She added: “The rams are owned by the Hook family, of Ducklington. People thought they were beautiful.

“The winner of the competition will receive a luxury woollen throw.

“Hopefully people will now be tempted to come to the County Show, where there are dozens of great attractions and breeds of animals.”

Miss Martin added: “We will have a main ring which will host a falconry display, Beagles and sheepdogs.

“There is also trade stands, refreshments and live music, a craft tent, a farmer’s market and a family dog show and terrier racing, so people should bring their dogs.”

Oxford Gun Club will also be exhibiting at the show and hosting a prize clay pigeon shoot.

And to celebrate the 2012 Olympics, all the county’s Young Farmers’ Club have built floats with an Olympic theme.

The show, which is being held just off the A415 at Ducklington, opens at 10am on Sunday. Entrance costs £7.50 for adults, £5 for 12 to 16-year-olds and under-12s. Dogs will be admitted free.
