THE Lord Mayor of Oxford Elise Benjamin will be among the audience when the sixth Oxford Film Festival kicks off tomorrow night.

This year’s festival celebrates the work of iconic American funnyman Woody Allen – and Ms Benjamin is a long-time fan.

The event, at the Phoenix Picturehouse cinema in Walton Street, Oxford, and co-sponsored by the Oxford Mail, kicks off with a screening of one of Allen’s earliest films, Play It Again, Sam.

Starting at 8.45pm, Play It Again sees Allen as a neurotic film critic obsessed with the film Casablanca, who turns to Humphrey Bogart for help getting over his divorce.

Also showing are Love and Death on Monday, Oscar-winning Annie Hall on Tuesday, Bananas on Wednesday, Hannah and Her Sisters on Thursday, and the festival finishes in style on Friday with Manhattan.

Phoenix manager Suzy Sheriff said: “These early films are wonderfully fresh, genuinely funny and very evocative.”

Half-price tickets are available for anyone with a copy of that day’s Oxford Mail (for tomorrow’s screening, copies of today’s Mail will be on sale in the foyer). For further information, call the Phoenix on 01865 316570 or go to the special Festival page on the Oxford Mail website.
