BUCS Championships

RADLEY’S Sophie Tyers cemented her place in history by becoming the first women’s 800m champion at the London 2012 Olympic Stadium.

Tyers won the 800m title in the British Universities and Colleges Sports (BUCS) Visa Championships, which were held during a test event at the Olympic venue.

The 20-year-old Bath University student clocked a personal best time of 2mins 06.29secs to pip Cambridge University’s Emily Dudgeon on the line.

“It feels absolutely amazing to have represented my university at the Olympic Stadium today,” said Tyers.

“Winning the first 800m at the Olympic Stadium is a really good feeling.

“It’s been amazing. I’ve had such a great weekend.

“The whole team has enjoyed it. We were just saying this morning we can’t believe it’s come to an end.

“It feels like we’ve been here for ages and none of us want to go.”

Finishing fourth in the same race was Tyers’s Radley clubmate Carolyn Plateau, who recorded 2.08.29 in Loughborough University colours.

The championships saw 1,500 students from all over the UK competing across 15 disciplines at the Olympic stadium.
